Bert returns
Aug 3rd, 2008 by Mick
Bert is due back today but is scheduled to land just too late to get to Newbury in time to see his debutant two year old Marine Boy (2:10). I will be going in the hope of having a trophy to collect. Marine Boy has shown he has ability at home, as his Gimcrack entry suggests, but the pitfalls of backing first time out youngsters was illustrated by his trainer’s Noverre To Go yesterday - a certain winner but for running grren when being sent to the front. Another concern is that a couple of other two year olds that Tom sent to the course for the time this week disappointed. However, his horses continue to run well in general and Marine Boy seems fine. We would have preferred to be drawn nearer the rail but are hopeful that he can be there or thereabouts.

Good luck…. have taken a smallish position. Here’s hoping for a peach of a ride again from Mr Kingscote.
Bert welcome home. Still very interested in your football system you refered to a while back. The proper leagues kick off next saturday, still no striker to note to replace Morrisson down at Selhurst.
Good luck this afternoon. Yesterdays Colt ran off a true line when it heard the crowd IMO. Giving the winner 7lbs makes it very interesting. If it had won I think it may have been quoted for next years 2000G.
We may be hearing more about MB in the coming weeks and months. It would be nice if he could put daylight between himself and the field.
Teading @ 3 to 4/1 me thinks. As you say Mick there are pitfalls lumping on first timers and altho if he does not have any problems he could go in easily but i think ther are far too many ponderables for me to have an investment other than a cockle double with another horse for interest.
It would be nice if it did scoot in by 20 legths swinging on the bridle with a double handfull looking like the next Shergar … oh dreams eh but if your not innit you can winnit as they say.
Some good bets on the football today in the Emirates coup Juventus EVENS sPURS @ HOME evens and a two ball match at the golf for a nice specualtive treble for me for a bit of interest on the footy front.
Goodluck and welcome back Berty boy .. back to business on the horsey front my man.
How easy was that?
It looked like a winner coming out of the stalls.
Hope Richard is OK.
I’ve got it on record.
Was going today but too lazy.
Well done Mick Bert and all.
Bert / Mick thanks for the advice you have made my weekend had a very good wager and got 7-1 and later 3-1. Absolutely delighted it looks a really good horse and hope it really delivers for you going forward. When bert steps off the plane he could not wish for any better news. Absolutely delighted and thanks once again.
Thanks Mick/Bert,
that was impressive. Had the race won 3f out, bring on the gimcrack.
Nice amount of daylight! Should be very competitive in the Gimcrack. The time of today’s race looked very good against the others and that’s without being put under pressure. It would be nice if the G1’s here allowed Geldings but a trip overseas would probably be well justified. Well done and good luck.
Many congratulations Bert. Think that Marine Boy will certainly earn his corn. Couldn’t be with a better trainer to give him every chance. Our lad is in the same barn …….. hope MB has a word with him tonight to save another slip up like Nottingham a couple of weeks ago ! JD
I think he was ‘there or thereabouts’ ! As lastfiver says, the time was very good despite the fact that Marine Boy was cantering most of the way.
He was spooked by the path which runs across the course after the line and jinked, throwing Richard off. However, both jockey and horse seemed fine afterwards. The lap of honour was well earned.
Bert was waiting at Passport Control as the race was run and I was giving him a commentary. I didn’t realise that the line dropped after a furlong so my Peter O’Sullivan style performance was wasted !
I see via the entries for the Gimcrack that MB has been given a RP rating of 110 which is 5 higher than Tom’s Group 2 winning 6f 2-y-o Classic Blade, MB was also given a speed figure of 94. It would make him the highest rated One Cool Cat in training.
Slight revision….I see Classic Blade has a RPR of 112…so he’s actually just behind!
My pre-race mail was spot on if you read it about dreaming Marine would hose up as it did !
Mark, i don’t think you can claim that your mail was ’spot on’ for the following reasons:
1) You said that Marine Boy winning in the style described was a ‘dream’ - thus implying that it couldn’t be a reality.
2) “think ther are far too many ponderables for me to have an investment” - this prediction was tangibly incorrect.
3) I could make a similar ‘prediction’ about any horse, which would read along the lines of: ‘It could win in superb style, and that would be really great, but it could get beaten by another horse and disappoint’. Such a predition would cover about 90% of possible outcomes with the exception of the horse in question winning by a very small margin!
In conclusion, I don’t think you should be championing your predictive power when you didn’t actually make a clear and accountable prediction!
Fer run and jump mate you are a numpty !
I meant Ferg as you probably know Ferg!
