Best fresh

I’ve been in Portugal for a week now with the family and my mother-in-law. The weather’s great and we’re all having a good time.
The news from home starts with one real tragedy. Astrodome had an accident on the gallops - he struck into himself, severing two tendons including his digital flexor tendon. There was nothing to be done - he was put down.
It’s devastating news - he was a big favourite of mine. There’s no point in dwelling on this sort of stuff but it’s a real blow.
Max ran ok on Saturday, finishing sixth in the Cammidge. She behaved really well on the course, going to the start and going in well - she was a bit green coming back but it was only her fifth race and all in all it was a big step forward. I’d like her to have finished closer - she ran to free and finished tired - but it bodes well for the season. Tikka Masala ran a surprisingly good race in the week, finishing a fairly close second in a fair looking maiden at Kempton. She may be better than I had thought.
I’ve had a few bets while I’ve been away with no success. I took most of the money out of my account just before I left - I needed it to support a few investments. I don’t have a lot left in there now, and if I lose it today I’m going to take a break from betting. It feels pretty tough in the world right now and I want to be concentrating on my business interests - I’ve been thinking about business stuff more and more over the last few weeks, and I’m losing interest in betting on racing.
I’m backing two horses today. Tatenen was a big bet for me at Cheltenham, but he fell early in the Arkle. I’ll back him to recover things today. In the big one I’m just having the one bet on a complete outsider - Eurotrek. He hasn’t had that many races over a long racing life - Sam Thomas is perfectly able on an outsider. He could be anything - he may be best fresh and he ought to be fresh today having not raced for around two years.

Sorry to hear about Astrodome Bert, horrible. A rest from betting is always a good idea I think otherwise hard earnt winning just disppear. I backed Butler in the national and feel it was a “school boy error” he won for me at cheltnham when 50/1 and i should have quit supporting him then…..ho hum
Hi Mr Black
I would just like to say thankyou for you staffs hospitality throughout the year. Stuart is my betfair account manager and he is a credit to his job. I am writing to you in the hope that you could help me out, i am an amateur jockey which i do for a pleasure and hobby i have previously ridden in 11 charity races over the last 4 years for lots of great charities. I am riding in early May at Uttoxeter in a memorial race for the late Ed Weetman. The race is over 1m.2f flag start i have been placed in 4 races but have never won one. I was hoping you would be so generous as to allow me to ride one of your horses, if possible kings head as i have seen the horse run on a few occasions and i feel i would win the race on it. I collect sponsorship for the charity with the inclusion that should i win its double to the charity. Hope you enjoy your hols in portugal and i agree about the fact that betfair is under estimated for me i think its the best new business idea since bill gates invented microsoft. kind regards Maurice McCarthy tel 07966661078 email 999mo@live.co.uk
I am sorry to hear about Astrodome; I lost a horse I had a half share in a few years ago and it is a horrible experience.
It sounds like a break from betting would be a good idea; I am taking a break myself at the moment. I liken the form I am in to a virulent virus for which there appears to be no cure and one just has to sweat it out and wait for it to pass. Whatever I do I cannot back a winner, whether I study a race for an hour or just follow the money - it makes no difference as the “virus” strikes again and again. I will dip my toe back into the water every now and again to see if the virus has passed but until it does there is no point in trying to beat it.
Very sorry to hear about your loss, unfortunately that is one of the big negatives about the sport. My wife will not let me have any NH race horses, simply because of the risk of fatality. Luckily I am allowed the odd flat horse and my most recent 2 YO has a name that a friend of mine came up with. The name my friend came up with “Boom and Bust” - very apt for the times……
