Days of reckoning
Apr 15th, 2010 by Bert
I got my timings wrong on my last blog - I only have one runner today and the big day is tomorrow. The one today is a good one though - Morana goes in the Craven.
It’s a big ask to win a race like this and I’m not putting him up for a bet, but he’s likely to go well. We hadn’t planned to run him this early in the season, but he was so well in himself and he’s been showing a lot more speed than we thought he had. We’re giving it a go, and if he wins we go for the Guineas.
Mullionmileanhour is a horse I like physically and he’ll be my bet of the day. I will of course also back Morana.
Tomorrow is the day of reckoning, and any of mine could go well. I’m struggling to pick one to back without seeing the tissues, and unfortunately I’m going to be on a plane tonight and early tomorrow and I won’t have the chance to update.
Blast Furnace goes nicely but would ideally want a little cut - may be worth following if she is a decent price as we don’t really know how good she is.
Western Eyes may need the run.
Foghorn goes nicely at home and we like him. He is beatable though and this is often a hot race - I wouldn’t want to take too short a price.
Blue Jack is an exciting runner but we don’t know a lot about him and he may need it - I’d be inclined to wait for another day.

Thanks for the up date Bert. Very pleased with D’argent the other week. I am going to Newbury on Friday so will look out for your horses. Hope they all run well. In the 2yro race thought it was between Hannon runner and Foghorn. Like rasmy later in the day but the card looks difficult.
I will support Morana today as he did me a good turn last year but nothing much else of interest more a watch with interest day.
By the way volcanic ash cloud could mean you are grounded!
Congrats on Blue Jack. Looked very good - well ahead of the handicapper at this point. Hope you managed not to wait for another day. Someone backed it.
Thanks Eachway - I don’t know who backed him but unusually for me I didn’t have a single penny on. Tom said that whatever he did today he would come on for the run - his main target was Chester. He could be pretty smart.
Obviously I am grounded James - could be here for a while by the sound of it.
I didn’t mention Maxwell Hawke who goes later at Thirsk. He should have an excellent chance but he’s already been backed. He could have a good year this year after a poor one last year.
Foghorn was withdrawn on a technicality - annoying.
I am guessing there are worse things than being stranded in Jamaica. Hope your kids won’t be too disappointed if they have to miss a few days of school…
The other one you didn’t mention was Coconut Ice for the Timeform-Betfair Syndicate. Do you still have an interest in them? She ran a very promising debut I thought, to chase up two of the previous winners.
Bert,
Just returned from days racing at Newbury. Blue Jack was my only winner but at 16-1 made the day worthwhile. He did it very well and looks a good horse.
Blast Furnace was in the lead for a long time and it was a day when all front runners faded in the last furlong and ones which sheltered in behind came through. Not certain but they may have been running into a head wind. She looks a nice horse.
Western Eyes was slowly into stride and looked as if would be much better for the race.
Foghorn also looked well forward and was dismounted in stalls and backed out. You look in for a good season.
I certainly backed it!!!!! Nice one Bert, delighted your new colours got off to a flying start for the yard. I thought Coconut Ice ran really well today behind two horses well supported and with a run under their belt. Coconut Ice ran well if a little green at times and I will be lumping next time out.
Will be interested to watch the captain Rio 2yo tommorrow for Tom with my interest in Vegas Palace.
Hi Bert,
I backed Blue Jack ante-post for the Ayr Gold Cup last year (www.thesportsman.org.uk - sep 18th entry on results page) and held him in high regard. He never managed to do it on the day but def looked a decent sort last year.
Another nice horse ran from the TBRC today in Coconut Ice and looks sure to land a maiden.
Best wishes for the flat season,
Scott
