Not the easiest

A quiet day yesterday - my two boys went to see “The Snowman” up in town with Jane’s mother. Eddie who is four and talks non stop and has opinions on everything had his grandmother laughing all day. He explained his strategy to her for getting us to put the TV on; “I ask mum, and if she says no I ask Dad - he always says yes”. Hmm. The boys woke me this morning with some mundane question - Jane was downstairs making breakfast. I said yes as apparently I always do. As they wandered downstairs I heard Eddie say “we must ask Mum now as she’s the importantest for everything”. Well at least I know my place.
I saw more action on the Wii today - I’m getting pretty hot if I say so myself. When you start you have to create a little cartoon character of yourself, called a Mii. Three of the children created sweet smiling Miis for themselves, as I guess you would expect. Eddie on the other hand created a rather grotesque character - wild hair, scowling eyes, mouth wide open. It is unmistakeably him though. The various Miis appear randomly in the Mario Kart game - every time I see Eddie’s scowling face it makes me laugh. Little things as they say.
I see Kevin Pieterson quit as England captain today - I can’t say I’m surprised. One of the privileges of working at Betfair was an association with the England team, particularly in 2005 when we were one of the sponsors of the Ashes series. I’ve met most of the 2005 team at one time or another and you couldn’t find a nicer, friendlier bunch - with the exception of Pieterson, who, in 2005 was not the easiest company (although in fairness I only met him once). From my limited viewpoint today was an accident that had been waiting to happen.
King’s Head runs tomorrow in a claimer. He must have a good chance, but he’s not been the easiest ride lately and at 5/4 he doesn’t look great value. I don’t think I’ll be backing him.

Piterson too big of an ego for me. Too sum it up what i am trying to say is dont be fooled good cricketer or not he is a big WATER TANKER if you get my drift …. fing swanning about on a safari issuing his orders and hes only been in the job months.
Wont do the England teams form any good either, looking like those days of a parade aroung London in open toppped buses were a looooon way ORF as they say in South Africa.
Just a quick note to say that King’s Head doesn’t run following a an unsatisfactory scope.
Bert, please could you give me your insight on the betfair place market do you like to use it i know a lot of friends who specialise in it backing 3 and 4 and 5 to 1 shots that they cant see not getting placed and wage big bets at 11/10 10/11 is it a good policy would be amazing you gave your insight my best mate who is a professional gambler and close pals with harry findlay has had 50k on welsh opera in the 4.05v at wolves to get placed at 6/5 ive had a small dable admittedly he choses and picks and may not have a punt for months but he claims he makes good money enough to work from home with % plasmas and his trusty i mac!! thanks if you attempt to explain the place market for me. Also why do you claim bad horses like peintre agent who will never really make the cut??Thanks a million i love your blog and all the insight you give you seem to always say it how it is! Mr Hunter
WH,
I don’t often bet in the place markets. On the few occasions I do each year I seem to do well - I use them for horses which I feel confident will run up to their best and don’t need any luck in running but may be a little short on ability. The BF place markets are fair and well priced but they are not as strong as the win markets and you’d often be pushed to get a big bet on. With a normal bookmaker the place odds are dependent on the win odds (and other things - the type of race, the number of runners etc.) and you can only bet each-way unless they allow you to take the Tote place odds - with BF it’s a totally separate market. The number of places paid out doesn’t change with non-runners. I’m not sure what else I can explain.
With Peintre D’Argent - we claimed her because we hope that one day she will make the cut, at least to some level. I’ve claimed eight horses (seven of them fillies) in the last few years, with varying degrees of success. I’ve got a good feeling about Peintre D’Argent, but then I am an eternal optimist…
