Today’s fancies
Oct 13th, 2007 by Bert
Quite a few old favourites running today, and I’ll be having a few bets.
I spent a fair bit of time with Pete C-H last week, and he runs Spirit of Sharjah in the first at Ascot. From what I’ve heard of the horse I give him a small edge over his principal opponent Captain Gerrard, another favourite of mine and a reliable yardstick. SoS is a bit of a monkey and may be a tricky ride, but the price justifies a bet for me. In the 3.35 at Ascot I may side with Major Willy who may be able to make his experience show against a few well hyped rivals.
At York in the first I’ll go small on Goodbye Mister Bond, who is back to the right mark. Major Eazy goes in the third, and having spoken to my co-owners I’ll be backing him - I’ll also back Max One Two Three who is a lovely looking filly with some talent. In the 3.45 I’ll side with Zomerlust, who may have conditions right and is a price. In the last I’ll go with Market Forces, a horse who really caught my eye in the early season but looked as if she would be better for more time, which she has now had.
In Prince Ary’s race I note that Chaninbar runs - this may be an incredibly well handicapped horse, and if fit could walk away with the race.

Bert, Firstly may i say that i greatly enjoy reading your blog and wish you continued success. I have been an avid reader of your blog for a while now and was greatly taken by Market Forces performance at Newmarket on Sat and having made a small profit i was adamant that i would follow her next time out. I note she is declared to run on Thurs at Nottingham and having had my heart set on backing her again, I noticed Highland Legacy is also in the race, who you mentioned you would be following since his defeat of your very own Shawhill at Windsor back at the end of Aug. I also notice Spencer goes to Nottingham for the one ride (HL). Both horses with penalty’s, both due to go up further next week! Any thoughts you might have on the race would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

CM,
thankyou.
I’ve had a look at the race. Market Forces may become a top class horse whereas HL looks more like a solid handicapper. She’s giving him over a stone though in a long distance slog through soft ground - she may be classier but this race isn’t going to be about class. I couldn’t form a strong view.
