Baldy rides again
Sep 2nd, 2007 by Bert
A poor day yesterday, and the end to a bad week of betting. I’m going to take a break from betting fairly soon - it’s too time consuming and too much of a distraction.
Baldovina makes her hurdling bow today in a pretty uncompetitive maiden. On the face of it she has a lot going for her - she has the best form in the race, she’s may be in the best shape she’s been in since I’ve had her (she never scoped clean for Tom but she is clean now), she’s in a great yard with a great jockey up and the reports from the gallops and stable are great. I can’t have her at 7/4 though - she always showed up well on the home gallops with Tom but she never did anything on the course and showed a fairly poor attitude at the business end of the race. I’m hoping all this will change and maybe it will, but I’m not inclined to bet on it. I’ll watch from the sidelines.
Shepherds Warning finally comes out tomorrow in a nursery at Wolverhampton. The 5f trip is on the short side for her now and she may just need the race to sharpen her up, but this said she could still run well. I’ll back her if the price is over long, but I’ll probably just be watching.

Shepherds Warning
I was a bit surprised to see SW run over 5f today (and I don’t say that smugly or aftertimer). I mentioned previously that when Jamie Spencer rode her at Beverley late April he said then she wants 7f. We only ran her at Thirsk over 5f as the 6f races had not started yet. From a wide berth all looked to be happening a bit quick for her today and the sand seemed to be flying a bit. Hopefully the run will have brought her on.
Hope she is back safe - stick her over 7f or even 8f and hopefully she will deliver.
Good luck with the stable of horses.

You said it was unlikely you would bet on Baldovina, but Sporting Life web site’s race return shows activity in the region of £9K. I wonder whose money!
Mike
Andrew,
you could have mentioned Zaskar imo
a performance reflective of a good trainer.
Kevin,
I agree that she wants further. She was run off her feet and as you say the sand was flying, which would have been off putting. If there had been a 0-65 7f nursery (or similar) we would have put her in it, but there wasn’t one and we wanted to get a race into her now. We will run her over 7f the first chance we get.
Mike,
it doesn’t surprise me that Baldovina was backed - she always worked like a decent horse on Tom Dascombe’s gallops but didn’t reproduce it on the course. She worked well on the Pipe gallops as well - I don’t trust her and I didn’t have a penny on her but anyone who had seen or heard of her gallops work would have a good reason to back her on that basis.
HQO,
what about Max one two three? I was aware that Zaskar had been working well but Tom wouldn’t have thanked me if I had said so on my blog. I have nothing to hide about my own horses and I’ll always represent them honestly on here but I have to be a bit selective in what I say otherwise.
Tom is, I believe, a very good trainer - dedicated and very hard working.

7 and a half furlong 0-65 nursery Beverley 11th September (enter by 12 noon Wednesday), though she will still be running off a mark of 59 then - drop 2 for yesterday ?
1 mile 0-65 at Kempton on 15th is first off any revised mark, but back on the sand.
Good luck !
Kevin
I made a killing yesterday.
I had to tell you because I listened to one of your posts very carefully last week. (not telling which one) I should send you a cheque though
Don’t give up so soon. Even though Del Mar and Saratoga have come to a hault, there is Belmont right around the corner. In fact, in order to help a fellow handicapper out, I would like to offer you a site that could help redirect your plays from losers to winners. I have been using it throughout the Del Mar meet and although I like to consider myself a good handicapper, I definitely needed some help and the FIGS were just what the doctor ordered. For example, their card for tomorrow 9/7/07 at BELMONT is:
Race 1
Top Level: 3,4,5
Race 2
Top Level: 7
Race 3
Top Level: 2
Race 4
Top Level: ,7,8
Race 5
Top Level: 2,5
Race 6
(pass)
Race 7
Top Level: 4,5
Race 8
Top Level:4,5,7
Race 9
Top Level: 9
If you like em, go to http://www.dhfigs.com to get them, they do this daily. If you want to play in a great contest, go to http://www.betdhc.com, I play there too. With all the new US laws in effect, I like to play safe. Just passing on the good word, good luck to all.
