Bloodletting
Sep 18th, 2008 by Bert
I spoke to a friend in the financial markets this morning - he said “these are the days when you keep the papers for posterity”. We’ve had plenty of supposed crashes in the twenty five years he’d been in the city for, but nothing to match the events of recent days. Lehmans gone, Merrill Lynch and Halifax swallowed up, AIG bailed out by the Fed to the tune of $80 billion. They are the sort of headlines that don’t mean much to anyone who doesn’t follow the financial markets, but they are very real and very meaningful.
I thought the most positive thing to happen was that the Fed (the US treasury) didn’t bail out Lehmans - they allowed them to crash and burn. The big picture is incredibly ugly, and it’s not going to unwind without a bit of bloodletting. I’m happy to be away from it all.
I recently posted a picture of a Pivotal yearling I bought last year - I think she’s a real peach. Her full sister Sri Kandi ran yesterday and won, landing a gamble in the process - she ran green and only won half a length, but she looked impressive.
Bet Noir goes tonight in the 6:50 at Great Leighs, and she’s probably going to be favourite. I think she should have won last time, and I think she’ll be even better over the longer distance tonight. She should have a very strong chance.

I thought Sri Kandi was getting a bit ‘too hot’ at the start and was also too keen in the race. Needs to settle down to progress and hopefully temperament wont get the better of her.
PS
good luck in the first tonite
It’s about time these big-time gamblers were tamed by ALL governments. Short-selling with shares you do not own should be classed as market fixing. “Borrowing” shares to sell and then buying them back at the lower price is price fixing in my opinion and should be outlawed.
Governments around the world seem unable to curb the greedy traders who seem to get away unscathed. I think Northern Rock should have been left to go to the dogs! Since then all the finance houses and banks seem to expect to be bailed out when their grasping financial wheeler-dealing goes wrong!
The whole house of cards could still collapse and in some ways I wonder if such a catastrophe would FORCE the leaders of all countries to get a real grip on the way financiers around the world seek to gamble with other people’s money the way they have done for far too long.
Crazy world!
Bert I recall you saying that Petes horses were working well, so yesterday I backed his Furious Belle e.w @14/1 and finished 2nd.She impressed greatly and is a winner in waiting. I then noticed across the card that MC had Grit running, thought that maybe his stable would be trying to give him a boost following his accident, so took him at 7/1 with the proceeds from ‘Furious’….happy days, it can be extraordinary the rationale we sometimes use to pick winners.
Good luck today Bert with MB. I don’t suppose anyone can guess how he will run today after the problems at the yard. Has he been able to do much work bert?
