When I left the RAF in Jan 1956 I went to work as a "settler" in a tiny bookies office. No LBOs then, all phone work and *runners*. There were six of us, the boss, Arthur Horton, four tele-settlers and the ticker-tape boardman - and we all smoked. The boss smoked Capstan Full Strength and the rest stuck mainly to Players. When anyone opened a packet of fags he would lob one to everyone else. It was virtually chain-smoking inside a London fog! I gave it up in 1970; just stopped and never looked back.
