Infamy infamy…
Dec 8th, 2007 by Bert
… they’ve all got it in for me. Fallongate abruptly winds to a merciful close, the Fallon six walk free and the recriminations begin. I haven’t read all of the papers yet. One article I read said that the case is “far from over”, suggesting that Fallon and others may seek compensation. Another simply says that there was never any evidence against Fallon. I’m just glad it’s over and I hope British racing can move on from this.
On a rainy Saturday it’s going to be hard work for any horse that doesn’t go in this ground. My clear bet of the day is Pancake, a hearty type making his chase debut who should appreciate the conditions underfoot. In the big race process of elimination leads me to Voy por Ustedes, but not with any great confidence.

No way is it over. Fallon has reportedly failed a drugs test in France (six month ban last time). And I gather that the evidence in court was that he broke the rules of racing by using unregistered phones in the weighing room and consorting with a warned off person. More fireworks yet to come I reckon.
Bookmaking has now become “universal” in that I, and any other individual, can “lay” horses. It has opened the game up to all and sundry. No licence is required, nor do you have to be a “fit and proper person” to get involved with the new form of betting.
It therefore seems probable that certain individuals or syndicates can profit from laying horses for large sums on any horse, after the rider has been *persuaded* to fall out of the side door, or challenge the leader “just too late” and so on.
Why somebody like Fallon would risk involvement is beyond me. Other lesser mortals might succumb to this easy money temptation and betting exchange systems must make this type of fraud easier to commit.
Betfair have helped open up the thing.
The paper trail is followable now.
Good for racing.
