Shawhill | Trainer: TOM DASCOMBE

I’m going through a quiet period horse wise.¬† Mon Michel is probably out for the season, and he was possibly my best prospect for this year.¬† Tifernati was bought to go hurdling this year, but he had a massive wart on his backside which had to be removed - he should go in to Gary’s [...]

I bought another mare at Tattersalls last week - Veiled Beauty is the dam of The Cheka, and I paid 160k Guineas for her.¬† She’s by Royal Academy out of¬†a decent Khaled Abdulla mare, and she’s in foal to Byron.¬† I’ll be cheering The Cheka on as he goes for glory in 2009.
Veiled Beauty will [...]

I went down to Lambourn yesterday and spent the morning with Tom Dascombe.¬† He’s extended his stable by taking over the stables next door - until recently the home of Paul Blockley.¬† I had a look at all my horses.
There isn’t a lot to report.¬† All were well.¬† Marine Boy continues to impress with his [...]

I had a good day at Wimbledon with Jane and our two daughters.  In truth the girls were a bit too young to appreciate it and they got bored towards the end.  When Andy Murray went two sets down we decided to call it a day and head home.  Oh well.
I spent most of the morning [...]

It’s a big time of year as an owner, and there are highs and lows.¬† Aintree was ultimately a real mix, and there was a lot of good and bad on¬†Saturday.¬† I didn’t go up as I was at AFC Wimbledon for a match that my wider family were sponsoring in memory of¬†my¬†great uncle, who [...]

Back from a long week at Cheltenham and a lot to catch up on.
Mon Michel didn’t run his race.¬† He needs to come off a strong pace and there was no pace on early.¬† He needs half decent ground and he didn’t get it.¬† The horse is fine and he’ll be winning again soon.¬† I [...]

A busy week, and a difficult one with Jane being ill with flu and me not being able to drive.¬† I still managed to fit in three visits to the racecourse, and with Cheltenham coming up I’m going to be raced out be the end of next week.
On Wednesday I went down to Fontwell, where [...]

First things first, and the diet’s going ok - 18st3 this morning.¬† I’ve had a headache but nothing worse than that - I still haven’t worked out how I intend to do it, but the one thing I know I must do is break my sugar habit permanently.¬† Thanks all for the encouraging comments.
¬†I’m having [...]

Hoorah!! Another win for the heroes as Major Eazy triumphs at Salisbury in a pretty hot conditions race under¬†a nice¬†ride from Richard Hughes.¬† He was returned at 12-1, but there was clearly a bit of money for him (ahem…).¬† He’ll go into the sales at some point and this will have done him no harm [...]

Winker made the front page of the Racing Post today as Jeremy went public with our ambitious plans.¬†¬†Winker is extremely well and we think¬†he’s the best 2yo out there - we’re going to try to win both the Middle Park and the Dewhurst to prove our point, and we’re hoping we can persuade Jim Bolger [...]

Shawhill goes up to York to run in a competitive little listed handicap.¬† She’s the outsider of five, and I fancy her to go very well.
There are a lot of imponderables here;

She’s never raced on ground as soft as this
… or over a distance as long as this
Last time she won she was on a [...]

After a lot of hype Ary finally came out on Saturday.¬† It looked as if he was dead and buried, but in a dramatic finale he stormed back to beat Tom.¬† Unfortunately King’s Quay came on the wide outside and beat them both - still an excellent¬†second, and if the cards had fallen a little [...]

… and treat those two imposters just the same…¬† I’m not sure I agree with Rudyard Kipling on that one - I definitely prefer triumph to disaster and I’ve seen a bit of both this week.
Authorized’s defeat last week was a blow - I was hoping he’d have an unbeaten 3yo year.¬† I’m less comfortable [...]

I’ve been waiting to write that headline for a long time.¬† Major Eazy’s win at the fifth attempt on Saturday night was long overdue, and at last we have confirmation of something we have believed for a long time - he is a proper racehorse.
Every jockey who has sat on ME has told us that [...]

I went to see Tom Dascombe on Thursday, and welcome Shawhill back from France.¬† The RP rated her run 99, and Timeform gave it 95.¬† We’ll continue to aim her at listed races or better.¬† Baldovina was well and she may run tomorrow.¬† We’ve been trying to get a run into her for a while, [...]

I’ve had an enormous number of second places this year, and there haven’t been many that I have been genuinely happy about.¬† Shawhill’s courageous second place in France, clobbered¬†close to¬†the line with a decent gap back to third, is one I will remember affectionately¬†for a long time.
Taking a horse abroad is not easy.  We took [...]

Shawhill showed again what a game filly she is without getting her head in front. The ground was totally different to anything she had encountered to date, but she dealt with it well. She blew a lot more than last time and she’s due a rest. I’ve had a chat with Tom - we’ll give [...]

The end of a long week. King’s Head didn’t win, but after the rain I didn’t expect him to and I didn’t have a penny on him - for some reason he was heavily punted. Crimson Monarch didn’t stay. Ger Butler proved that he is very much in form, winning Highland Legacy’s race with a [...]

Winker Watson, recently top of the Racing Post 2yo ratings with 92 has slipped to fourth - Major Eazy is joint seventh on 88. Achilles of Troy tops the list with 100. Call me a pedant but I don’t like the name - Achilles was Greek and he fought against the Trojans, not with them.
Shawhill [...]

Mick and I went down to Lambourn early on Thursday to catch up with a few trainers.
We started with Tom Dascombe, and watched all four horses in light work. Conservation has recovered from the gelding operation and also from an accident he had on the horse walker - he’s still a while away from a [...]
