Shepherds Warning | Trainer: NICKY VAUGHAN

'Shepherds Warning' Category

I’m going through a quiet period horse wise.¬† Mon Michel is probably out for the season, and he was possibly my best prospect for this year.¬† Tifernati was bought to go hurdling this year, but he had a massive wart on his backside which had to be removed - he should go in to Gary’s [...]

I went to the HWPA (Horseracing Writers and Photographers Association) awards on Monday.  Our table was a mix of Betfair horseracing team and journalists - I had John Cobb (Independent Racing editor) on my right and Guardian writer Greg Wood and his wife on my left.  Matt Williams (RP) and Rob Shepherd (NOTW) were also on the table.
The [...]

I’ve had better weekends.¬† On Friday in the day my main fancies ran badly,¬†although I found a couple of winners¬†to limit the damage.¬† I had three runners in the evening, all fancied a little bit and¬†they all finished tailed off!¬† I decided to have a go at the Scoop6 on Saturday - I put only [...]

Three runners at Wolverhampton this evening, and I may go up.¬† King’s Head goes in the 8:50 and both Shepherd’s Warning and Effingham go in the 9:20.
King’s Head comes here mainly because we haven’t had the right ground to run him over the jumps.¬† He doesn’t like it soft and it’s tough finding the right [...]

Just one runner today - Shepherd’s Warning goes in the 8:20 at Wolver tonight.¬† I saw her at the stables a few months ago and I did a real double take - she’s still small but she’s¬†filled out unbelievably well in front and she looked like a different horse.¬† She should win more races.¬† I [...]

A good day on Sunday with King’s Head doing it nicely.¬† He needs it G/F or firm and given that he has¬†invariably delivered¬†when he has had his ground I probably should have given him a stronger write up.¬† He may come out again on the weekend - he has entries on Saturday at Market Rasen [...]

I’ve been ringing around today and the news is mixed.
Lilac Moon has jarred one of her feet and it’s badly swollen.¬† It’s probably nothing major but we’re having a scan to be sure - she was down to run at Lingfield on Tuesday, but has obviously been left out.¬† It’s annoying as she’s been in [...]

Winker finally returned to action, but it was a disappointment.  He was seventh out of 16 in the Prix Jean Prat - a strong race, not disgraced but frankly I was hoping for a lot better.
There were excuses.  He lost a shoe coming out of the stalls - he subsequently lost 3 or 4 lengths [...]

Shepherd’s Warning was disappointing yesterday, but I’m not too worried.¬† She gets phased pretty easily, and we think that’s what happened yesterday - she’ll be back to her best in a small field going around a bend.
More rain today and more expected on Thursday.  Good going at Epsom is looking like a big outsider now [...]

Jane and I had a fun evening out on Saturday when we went to the final of Britain’s got talent.¬† I had VIP seats (bought in a charity auction), which basically meant we were lumped in with the families of the contestants.
We arrived at the very small studio a short while before the start, and [...]

A major blow yesterday when Mon Michel coughed and¬†later returned a bad blood test¬†after his final piece of work for the Totesport Trophy.¬† Everything up to this point had gone right and I thought he had a major chance of picking up the prize, but it wasn’t to be.¬†
He won’t be out for long but [...]

I made my first move in a new direction over the Christmas period when I effectively took a piece of Swindon Town FC.¬† Jeremy Wray (Ed‚ā¨‚ĄĘs brother) is a long time friend, and he was¬†working on¬†the deal alongside his business partner, Andrew Fitton.¬† Andrew takes the lead (and is chairman) with Jeremy playing a strong [...]

Phew.¬† I decided that having not backed Shepherd’s Warning last time I’d have a proper go at her this time.¬† She got home and she wasn’t claimed - a win double.¬† The RP marked the run at 65, 3lb below her last run, commenting that she was “not exactly progressive”.¬† Richard Kingscote told us that [...]

There are certain horses that really catch the eye, and one that caught mine a couple of years ago was Nicanor, who saw off the mighty Denman at Cheltenham in imperious fashion.¬† Harry Findlay¬†had taken¬†the box next to ours that day, and I know him pretty well - it wasn’t his best day and I [...]

Ugh.¬† This season is going from bad to worse -¬†it’s the fourth time I’ve decided to have a big bet on a horse the day before the race only to change my mind on the day and then see it win (others were Osana, Twist Magic, Denman).¬† I think I suffer from having too much [...]

A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL
It’s been a fairly low key Christmas for me this¬†year in as far as¬†Christmas with four small children can be.¬† My side of the family come round tomorrow - 18 of them with 11 children, which¬†may get a little noisy.¬†
I’ve been to church a couple of times this year, [...]

I’m still having a busy time in the run up to Christmas.¬†
On Thursday night I went to a do in the city - later on the Duke and Duchess of York turned up (separately), giving me my celebrity action¬†although I didn’t talk to them.¬† I got to Heathrow late, meeting Tom Goff,¬†and we¬†flew to Cork [...]

It was a big day for me yesterday, with Betfair finally launching the SP mechanism.  I kicked the product off over 2 years ago, but it was a year and a half before we started work on it (the Betfair roadmap is permanently backed up).  It is a very big piece of work - in [...]

A long day yesterday.¬† It’s been a while since I’ve made it to the racecourse so I decided to take a day out - it isn’t a disaster for me work wise as I can work from home in the morning and I always get a lot done on my Blackberry¬†when I take the train.¬† [...]

Bert is on his way to Chepstow and has asked me to pass on this morning’s news. Nicky Vaughan reports that Shepherds Warning is running a slight temperature and was a little lethargic when trotted out this morning. He suspects she may be coming in season. As a result, she will not be running this [...]

I’m pretty much done for the flat season now and looking to the jumpers.¬† Mon Michel was down to run tomorrow, but he doesn’t stand his ground after working moderately midweek - we think he’s ok but just needs a little more time.¬† My first runner of the jumps season proper will probably be Ours [...]

I added another horse to my string today - Max One Two Three, who won so well at York last time.¬† I’ve been eyeing her up for a while I was intending to try and buy her before the York race but I didn’t get around to it - I had a decent bet on [...]

The boss had a late one last night after the Betfair Pro-Am Golf Tournament so I’ll fill in for now. Bert has Prince Ary running at Market Rasen (3.45) today in a valuable handicap hurdle with ¬£30,000+ to the winner. He was touched off by a short head on his only previous visit to the [...]

As noted by Bert below, I‚ā¨‚ĄĘm going to be contributing to the blog from time to time to help keep things up to date and maybe prompt further thoughts and discussion. Comments are very welcome.

Captain Hurricane died of a heart attack this morning on the gallops.  He had recently been transferred to Tom Dascombe and was doing his first serious piece of work this morning.  He ran a bit flat and the jockey decided to get off and walk him back to the stable - a few minutes later [...]

Mick Stone is my racing manager, and he’s going to start contributing to my blog.¬† I think this is a good thing -¬† I go through long periods when I can’t find the time to post and Mick will help keep it fresh.¬† He’ll be making stable trips and reporting back, and no doubt he’ll [...]

I have a few interesting runners coming up.¬† Shepherd’s Warning runs over a mile tomorrow at Ayr - she is carrying far more weight than she would do in a handicap and will no doubt be a very big price but could run well.¬† Lord Snooty finally comes out on Friday at Newmarket and I’m [...]

Pete called us after Winker’s work this morning and said he is still running a bit flat and needs more time.¬† We could have run him over the weekend in group company but he’s too good a horse to take liberties with.¬† The Middle Park is only three weeks away and that is his next [...]

A poor day yesterday, and the end to a bad week of betting.¬† I’m going to take a break from betting fairly soon - it’s too time consuming and too much of a distraction.
Baldovina makes her hurdling bow today in a pretty uncompetitive maiden.  On the face of it she has a lot going for [...]

I had a long chat with Pete today.¬† It’s all systems go for Winker on Sunday week in the Prix Morny, and he’s working extremely well.¬† I don’t see anything beating him - if he wins we may go for an extremely aggressive 2yo campaign with him.
The best news he had concerned Bouguereau.  Pete was [...]

A very disappointing run from Effingham, who never got into the race and finished down the field at Ponty.¬† The ground, which was good to firm in the morning, was changed to firm with G/F patches immediately after the race.¬† Michael Hills reported that the horse wasn’t enjoying the ground at all.
I guess it wasn’t [...]

One I forgot to mention - Captain Hurricane runs on Friday at Newmarket.¬† He’s been pretty useless for a long time now, but I think that there’s a decent chance he’ll come right one day and when he does he’ll be a seriously well handicapped horse.¬† He got to a point where he was so [...]

Nothing runs for me during the week, but a fair bit of action at the weekend.
Prince Ary is down to run on Saturday at Market Rasen in a race that the Pipe’s have won on several occasions.¬† He ought to have a decent chance.¬† Baldovina has two entries for the Saturday and one at Windsor on the Monday [...]
