Strike two
Jul 12th, 2008 by Bert
An unbelievable day yesterday when Tom won the second 2yo group 2 with another incredibly cheap buy. Firth of Fifth cost 5,000 Guineas - Classic Blade 19,000 Euros. It is an incredible training feat, and great credit also to Richard Kingscote who rode so intelligently.
I didn’t go yesterday - it seemed like a good time to take a day out. I’m staying a home today and I won’t go to France to watch Winker either as I have a family christening. I take some solace in the fact that my horses invariably do better when I don’t go to watch them.
I don’t have time to watch it today but I may place a few early bets. York is riding heavy, which is specialist ground. Three proven types that I’ll follow are Zomerlust (2:40), Heaven Knows (3:15) and Wing Collar (3:50). In the last at Chester I’ll back Derrick’s Dotty to follow up.

Good Luck with Winker and your selections. See the no betting idea lasted about 5 seconds. :-).
I thnk I will give up TG, but I’m going on holiday at the end of next week so maybe that’s the time to do it. Still chewing it over.
Bert… please don’t give up the blog, I really enjoy you’re honest assements of your animals. As for punting, only you will make that decision, the only reason I can see for giving up is that it gets in the way of enjoying your horses when money goes down to add to the dissapointment of you as an owner. If the credit crunch hadn’t ruined the retail sector and my company had of sold as planned I would have joined you by now in the owning stakes, obviously with Tom….. I am itching to get my first horse, wonder how I’ll feel about punting when I do.
Good Luck Bert, whatever you decide to to do. Would be great to meet up with you and Mick for a lunchtime beer in Richmond or wherever, to compare notes on gambling and life on general.
Come on Winker! I’ll be backing him for sentiment’s sake after holding on to my 25-1 all winter for him in the Guineas.. Have a good holiday Bert; be interesting to see how things are looking on the punting front after the break!
Hi Bert
Best of luck with Winker tomorrow - I really mean it.
Please keep the blog going - this maybe the first time I’ve ever left a message but your blog is something I really look forward to reading when I’m in my boring office all day in front of my PC in London!
Simon.
Whats the word on Kings Head today. Johnny Murtaghs wife was given a ‚¬1000 charitiy bet on a chat show last night and has nominated Ballycologue in the Ladies Derby at the Curragh…might be something in it .
Bert hope you win with Winker 10-1 @ £10.000 will reap you nice return on top of prize money. Your luck is due to change mate but whether Winker is up to this i dont know. One thing for sure is his best performance is needed todate.

The bad luck continues apace; Winker out of the frame, which must be a huge disappointment. Surely, this run has to come to an end sooner than later. Hope so anyway.
