The big rematch
May 24th, 2008 by Bert
The Irish Guineas comes around, and Winker is still on the sidelines. I’d love him to be taking them on, but he’ll have to wait a little longer. On paper it’s a rematch between New Approach and HenrytheNavigator, but the Irish Guineas doesn’t always follow the script.
Last year the winners of the English Guineas, Cockney Rebel and Finsceal Beo both obliged in the Irish equivalents, both going off as favourites, but this is not the norm. In the ten years preceding this only four favourites won - two in the 2,000 and two in the 1,000. Four odds-on favourites were beaten and four other favourites lost at 6/4 or shorter. Half of the winners were 12/1 or longer, including 3 at 16/1 and two at 20/1.
I’ll oppose the two hot horses with Jupiter Pluvius in the 2,000. In the 1,000 on Sunday I like Halfway to Heaven.
Elsewhere I’ll take Green Manalishi to take the first at Haydock and Duke of Marmalade to win in Ireland on Sunday.
The Core Strength team sold a couple of horses last week - Ours and Better Together. We didn’t get a lot for them - £13k in total. They weren’t showing signs of greatness. On Sunday night Lord Snooty runs at Delaware Park. Skid Solo should be out next week, and also Scrapper Smith. Pansy Potter is close to a run.

How is max doing bert?
I backed Ours a few days ago and was nearly on a winner, finishing a strong 2nd place at decent odds.
Philip - that was Ours (IRE). Bert’s was Ours (FR).
Oops! Never noticed that; thought the trainer was different!
Anyway, I was pleased enough, even though a winner would have been better.
Good Morning.
It would be interesting if you blogged a bit more about other stuff as well.
Your new house?
Your view on what is happening in the world?
Your views on life in general?
Your view on the future of betfair and/or betting exchanges?
Your choice of course.
We have a house just outside Hungerford not too far from you why don t we have a drink somewhere in the middle ?
Betfair’s customer service doesn’t seem to know what emails it has sent out! I received one of the “Free £10 bet” offers on 23 May. Placed a couple of £5 (losing bets) and despite the offer to credit £10 within 72 hours ZILCH has been received.
Emails back and forth. So far they do not seem able to know that they’ve sent the original email to me! To cap it all I no longer have it either as I delete emails once I have acted on them.
Not a happy bunny. Think I’ll stick with Willie Hill.
I’ve been an avid reader of the blog for a while now please keep it going!
Did you back Zascar this evening Bert? She was really impressive! Any idea of a future target? I also watched Parisian Gift run at Doncaster on the 17th and thought that he was given what could be described as a tender ride. Any thoughts on him and any future engagements for him?
What a great ride for Zascar…. I’m sure Tom gave you the nod for it. Next race?
Tom was interviewed after the race and confirmed that he plans to enter Zaskar to in a listed race in France - the same one, at Le Lion d’Anger, that Shawhill ran 2nd in for Bert last year.
