Winker pulls out
Apr 13th, 2008 by Bert
Pete called this morning with the news - they had gone out with Winker and he was moving ‘like an old man’, a bit hunched and sluggish. The vet had indicated that this was a minor problem, but it wasn’t going to stand up to training in the short term and Pete wanted to back off. No-one disagreed. We have said his participation is ‘highly unlikely’ - everything indicates that he won’t get there but we don’t want to rule it out entirely.
I’m not as gutted as I thought I’d be. There were far worse possibilities - this is a minor setback, he’ll be over it in a short time period and it doesn’t look progressive or in any way related to the knee problem that kept him out of the Middle Park last year.

It is a very long season and very tough for a horse to be spot on for the Guineas and still spot on at the time of the Sussex and the QEII. As long as he comes good at some stage of the season.
I am sorry for the disappointment and glad that you have the strength to see beyond it.
Sorry about the injury to Winker, your openess and honesty deserve better, lets hope Skid Solo can provide you with some compensation later in the week.
Just found your site and I have really enjoyed my visit. Keep up the good work Bert.
Really sorry Bert to hear the news about Winker Watson but very impressed with the way you accept and cope with bad news. This game is full of highs and lows and let’s hope there are some highs around the corner.

What a choker, Bert. Let’s hope Winker gets over this and shows what he can do at some stage - if he can get to the Guineas that will keep alive my 25-1 from last summer but for now it’s thinking caps on to find another one to back.
Well done for being so open about things and best of luck for getting Winker to the racecourse as soon as he’s ready.
