Hoist by my own petard

Sunday Bess lost out in her maiden by a nostril. It was annoying as I’d had a bet, but I was hoist by my own petard. I have a policy with 2yos that I don’t like them hit on their first run – Richard gave Bess one small crack of the whip but didn’t want to hit her again. There was no pace in her race and it developed into a bit of a sprint which wouldn’t have favoured her. She’ll be very decent in time.

Whey Sauce goes today, and the only possible problem is the ground. She will at least cope with it – she’s been working on it this week and she seems to handle it fine – but her action suggests she’d like it firmer. Despite this I think she’ll go very well – Pete says she has improved four lengths from the last run, and in any case her last race didn’t work out as we’d have liked as she didn’t get the cover she would have wanted. Jack Mitchell, who rides again, didn’t hit her last time, but he will do today – she can improve considerably from that run for that. Fingers crossed.

Western Eyes goes in the last at Wolverhampton tonight – she’s run twice and has finished last both times. She should be a lot better today – whether she’s up to winning what may be a rather moderate contest remains to be seen.
